System And Method For Dusplaying Inherent Project Uncertainty

View page
US Patent:
20090055228, Feb 26, 2009
Filed:
Aug 23, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/844228
Inventors:
Bruce P. Henry - Seattle WA, US
Jason Carlson - Seattle WA, US
Charles A. Seybold - Sammamish WA, US
Bryan Wilkerson - Seattle WA, US
International Classification:
G06Q 10/00
US Classification:
705 7
Abstract:
A software and/or hardware facility for graphically displaying schedule uncertainty inherent in projects. In some embodiments, the facility generates uncertainty bars for display to users that express the uncertainty inherent in work items, such as projects and/or tasks. An uncertainty bar can visually indicate the work item's earliest start date, earliest expected finish date, expected finish date, latest expected finish date and latest finish date, as calculated by the facility. For a project that has multiple component tasks, the facility can generate an uncertainty bar for each component task. The facility can also generate an uncertainty bar for the entire project. In some embodiments, the facility generates graphs that display the history of uncertainty for work items.

System And Method For Managing Inherent Project Uncertainty

US Patent:
20090055237, Feb 26, 2009
Filed:
Aug 23, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/844219
Inventors:
Bruce P. Henry - Seattle WA, US
Jason Carlson - Seattle WA, US
Charles A. Seybold - Sammamish WA, US
Bryan Wilkerson - Seattle WA, US
International Classification:
G06Q 10/00
G06F 17/18
US Classification:
705 8
Abstract:
A software and/or hardware facility for managing project schedules having inherent uncertainty. The facility allows users to create hierarchical data structures to model projects and other collective efforts. The hierarchical data structures contain work items that can represent tasks, collections of tasks and collections of collections and tasks. Each work item can have associated with it an estimate provided by a user, such as a ranged estimate of the amount of work remaining before the work item is completed. Based at least in part on the provided estimate, the facility can calculate expected start and finish dates for each work item. By calculating expected start and finish dates for all or most of the work items in a project, the facility is able to calculate an expected end date for the entire project. By basing the calculation on ranged estimates, the facility can account for the uncertainty inherent in projects.

Transforming A Prioritized Project Hierarchy With Work Packages

View page
US Patent:
20120035974, Feb 9, 2012
Filed:
Jul 13, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/182411
Inventors:
Charles A. Seybold - Sammamish WA, US
International Classification:
G06Q 10/06
US Classification:
705 726
Abstract:
A software and/or hardware facility to improve the management of project schedules containing prioritized tasks. The project management facility allows a user to create one or more work packages by selecting tasks from one or more existing projects. Each work package is a collection of tasks that are to be executed out of order from the project or projects from which the tasks were selected. At the same time, the facility maintains the prioritization of the tasks in the original project or projects from which the tasks were selected. When tasks are added to a work package, the facility recalculates the work package schedule and any impacted project schedules to reflect the re-prioritization of the task. In some embodiments, the facility generates a link between each task that is contained in a work package and the project from which the task was selected.

System And Method For Using A Slider Control For Controlling Parameters Of A Display Item

View page
US Patent:
58777580, Mar 2, 1999
Filed:
Nov 22, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/753284
Inventors:
Charles Allen Seybold - Issaquah WA
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 314
US Classification:
345339
Abstract:
A control device for adjusting multiple parameters associated with an element or item of a user interface in an easy and intuitive manner. A slider control can be used to change the format or appearance of a timescale presented by the user interface. By using a single visual interface control, a slider control, a time-based scaling of a given view can be easily switched between predefined timescale settings for the timescale. The slider control, which comprises a fob and a rail, can control the parameters that dictate the appearance of the timescale, such as time units, date format, and labels. Once selected, the fob can be moved along the rail to a stop associated with parameter values for the timescale. The presentation of the timescale can be varied by moving the fob from one stop to the next stop along the rail, thereby varying the parameters defining the appearance of the timescale. A label containing information about the current timesetting for the slide control can be displayed in response to placing the cursor within the boundary for the slider control.
