Filed:
Feb 14, 2007
Appl. No.:
12/279681
Inventors:
Gerald Fournand - St. Petersburg FL, US
Bruce Keegan - St Petersburg FL, US
Assignee:
Essilor International (Compagnie Generale d'Optique) - Charenton Le Pont
International Classification:
G02B 3/00
B24B 9/14
US Classification:
359642, 451 43
Abstract:
A process for edging an optical lens for conforming the optical lens to the size and shape of a lens frame into which the optical lens is to be accommodated, said process comprising: a) providing an optical lens having a convex surface, the convex surface being provided with an anti-smudge topcoat rendering the optical lens inappropriate for edging; b) fixing a mounting element on the convex surface of the optical lens, preferably on its center, by means of an adhesive pad adhering both to the mounting element and the convex surface of the optical lens to form a mounting element/optical lens assembly; c) placing the mounting element/optical lens assembly in a grinding machine so that the optical lens is firmly maintained; and d) edging the optical lens to the intended size and shape, wherein, prior to step (b) of fixing the mounting element, the anti-smudge topcoat on the convex surface of the optical lens is pre-treated with a solvent selected from the group consisting of alkanols and dialkylketones under a mechanical stress.

Method For Post-Injection In Mold Lamination With An Adhesively Coated Functionalized Film

View page
US Patent:
20090283924, Nov 19, 2009
Filed:
May 14, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/152509
Inventors:
Peiqi Jiang - Tarpon Springs FL, US
Bruce Keegan - Seminole FL, US
Steven Weber - Clearwater FL, US
International Classification:
B29D 11/00
US Classification:
264 17
Abstract:
A method for laminating a functional film on to a plastic injection molded lens. An outer layer of the film is selected to perform an HMA-type function when subjected to the heat and pressure of the mold. After forming the lens, the mold is open and the film is loaded in to the empty insert. The residual heat and pressure bonds the film via the HMA to the lens, in a press lamination process. A functionally enhanced lens having a film intimately laminated on to one side.

The tri-layer adhesive includes a first latex adhesive layer disposed on the functional film and a second latex adhesive layer disposed on the optical base element. An HMA layer is disposed in between the latex layers to form a tri-layer adhesive to permanently retain the functionalized film on the optical base element. The method includes first coating a latex adhesive on the functional film and second coating a latex adhesive on the optical base element. An HMA is then coated on to one of the dried latex adhesive layers. The film is hot pressed on to the optical base element with the HMA sandwiched in between the latex layers to form a laminated optical device.

Abstract:
A method for fabricating a Fresnel lens or other lens having a structured surface such as refractive and/or diffractive bi-focal or other multi-focal lenses includes press-coating the structured surface with a low or very low refractive index coating material. The coating is sufficient thick to adequately cover the structured surface so that a smooth coating surface with good optical properties is obtained, for example in the case of a Fresnel structure a thickness greater than 1.5 times and less than 5 times the Fresnel structure height, and is cured in situ. A film, e.g., of PET, PC or PU or a film stack, e.g. a TAC/PVA/TAC film stack is prepared and a heat melting adhesive is applied to the side of the film or film stack to be contacted with the coated structured surface of the lens blank. The film or film stack is then laminated to the cured coating.
