Filed:
Jun 23, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/809497
Inventors:
Bernard L. Laurin - Ludlow MA
Don H. Rotenberg - Westboro MA
Harry D. Crandon - Woodstock CT
Assignee:
American Optical Corporation - Southbridge MA
International Classification:
B05D 302
B05D 306
B05D 310
G02B 110
US Classification:
427164
Abstract:
An abrasion-resistant organic optical element comprising a transparent base of a synthetic organic material having an adhering coating of an abrasion-resistant material comprising a polysilicic acid ester of an alcohol containing from 1 to 12 carbon atoms and a partially hydrolyzed vinyl polymer to provide polyvinyl alcohol, the coating being cross-linked with formaldehyde or zirconyl nitrate or mixtures thereof. The abrasion-resistant organic optical elements can comprise sheet material or a lens.

US Patent:
41734904, Nov 6, 1979
Filed:
Apr 18, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/897317
Inventors:
Don H. Rotenberg - Westboro MA
Patricia M. Cuffe - Dudley MA
Bernard L. Laurin - Ludlow MA
Peter R. Ramirez - Southbridge MA
Assignee:
American Optical Corporation - Southbridge MA
International Classification:
C09K 300
US Classification:
10628714
Abstract:
A coating composition which results from hydrolyzing 40 to 70 weight per cent tetraethyl orthosilicate and 60 to 20 weight per cent of certain silane is useful for providing abrasion resisting coatings for plastics after curing. Optionally, up to 20 weight percent of a silane having a reactive polar site or, in the alternative, a small percentage of a surfactant may be used to provide a dyeable coated article.

Abrasion And Antifog-Resistant Optical Element

US Patent:
40643085, Dec 20, 1977
Filed:
Aug 24, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/717065
Inventors:
Bernard L. Laurin - Ludlow MA
Assignee:
American Optical Corporation - Southbridge MA
International Classification:
C08J 712
G02B 110
G02C 702
B32B 1706
US Classification:
428410
Abstract:
An optical element is provided having a durable abrasion-resistant, antifog coating applied to at least one surface thereof by coating an optical element comprised of an inorganic or organic transparent base with a transparent abrasion-resistant antifog coating consisting of a lightly cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol, the desired degree of cross-linking being obtained by utilizing a combination of zirconium nitrate and formaldehyde as cross-linking agents.

Abrasion-Resistant Lenses And Process Of Making

View page
US Patent:
41276973, Nov 28, 1978
Filed:
Jan 24, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/762088
Inventors:
Bernard L. Laurin - Ludlow MA
Assignee:
American Optical Corporation - Southbridge MA
International Classification:
G02B 110
G02C 702
B32B 702
B32B 2706
US Classification:
428412
Abstract:
Plastic substrates of optical elements having surfaces coated with the abrasion-resistant coating compositions described in U. S. Pat. No. 3,986,997 are improved by utilizing a tie-coat comprising an A-alkylenealkoxysilane where A contains a group reactive with the substrate. For some substrates, particularly polycarbonate lenses, the coating process is substantially simplified by reducing criticality of conditions when the tie-coat of the present invention is used than when the process of the aforementioned patent is followed with the tie-coats conventionally used and disclosed therein.
