Systems And Methods For Power Stealing

View page
US Patent:
20130228633, Sep 5, 2013
Filed:
Mar 1, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/409985
Inventors:
Bartholomew L. Toth - Crestwood MO, US
Xiaobing Zhu - Chesterfield MO, US
Assignee:
EMERSON ELECTRIC CO. - St. Louis MO
International Classification:
G05D 23/19
US Classification:
236 1 R, 236 91 R
Abstract:
A thermostat includes a power stealing circuit selectively configured to provide power to the thermostat and to circuit(s) ancillary to the thermostat from power source(s) external to the thermostat, without requiring a common or neutral connection between the thermostat and the power source(s). Exemplary embodiments also are disclosed of a climate control system that includes such a thermostat. This thermostat can power-steal off of existing load wires (e.g., a W and/or Y terminal, etc.) and can provide power for a continuous backlight and/or other device (e.g., a remote sensor and/or low-power transceiver, etc.).

Fuel Burner Control System With Hot Surface Ignition

View page
US Patent:
49782924, Dec 18, 1990
Filed:
Mar 5, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/488221
Inventors:
Donald E. Donnelly - Glen Carbon IL
Bradley C. Zikes - St. Louis County MO
Dwain F. Moore - Marlborough MO
Jeffrey E. Price - St. Louis County MO
Bartholomew L. Toth - Crestwood MO
Assignee:
Emerson Electric Co. - St. Louis MO
International Classification:
F23N 500
US Classification:
431 75
Abstract:
A gas burner control system includes an electrical resistance igniter, gas valve means, and a microcomputer and related circuitry. The microcomputer and related circuitry control energizing of the igniter in such a manner so that the igniter, after successive ignition attempts, will eventually, in response to a learning routine, be heated to a desired ignition temperature. The microcomputer and related circuitry also control operation of a circulator blower in response to burner flame and provide for numerous checks on the integrity of system components.

Thermostat With Integral Means For Detecting Out-Of-Phase Connection Of A Two-Transformer Power Source

View page
US Patent:
48982296, Feb 6, 1990
Filed:
Sep 22, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/247492
Inventors:
Bernard T. Brown - St. Louis MO
Donald E. Donnelly - Glen Carbon IL
Bartholomew L. Toth - Crestwood MO
Assignee:
Emerson Electric Co. - St. Louis MO
International Classification:
G05D 2300
US Classification:
165 111
Abstract:
A low-voltage space thermostat for controlling operation of a heating and cooling system is provided with integral circuit means for detecting the existence of an unacceptably high voltage potential between two wiring terminals therein. Such a high voltage potential exists when the power source in the system comprises two transformers connected out of phase with each other.

Thermostat Providing Electrical Isolation Therein Between Connected Heating And Cooling Transformers

View page
US Patent:
51274647, Jul 7, 1992
Filed:
Mar 14, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/669602
Inventors:
William P. Butler - St. Louis MO
Bartholomew L. Toth - Crestwood MO
Assignee:
Emerson Electric Co. - St. Louis MO
International Classification:
F25B 2900
H02J 906
US Classification:
165 14
Abstract:
A low voltage space thermostat adaptable for controlling a heating-only apparatus or a heating and cooling apparatus. The thermostat includes a DC power supply and a voltage step-up transformer having two primary windings and a secondary winding for supplying electrical power to the DC power supply when there is a demand for heating, cooling, or fan operation. The thermostat also includes circuit means for supplying electrical power to the DC power supply when there is no demand for heating, cooling, or fan operation. The thermostat further includes circuit means, responsive to the existence of electrical power at a particular one of its wiring terminals, for providing electrical isolation, from each other within the thermostat, of two transformers incorporated in a two-transformer heating and cooling apparatus.

Control System For Gas Fired Heating Apparatus Using Double-Throw Radiant Heat Sensing Switch

View page
US Patent:
54031826, Apr 4, 1995
Filed:
Jun 6, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/254551
Inventors:
Bartholomew L. Toth - Crestwood MO
William P. Butler - St. Louis MO
Assignee:
Emerson Electric Co. - St. Louis MO
International Classification:
F23N 500
US Classification:
431 66
Abstract:
A control system for a gas fired heating apparatus which apparatus includes a burner, two gas valves and a hot surface igniter, and which control system includes a single-pole, double-throw radiant heat sensing switch having normally-closed contacts which open and normally-open contacts which close in response to the igniter being at a temperature above gas ignition temperature. The normally-closed contacts are connected in series with the electrical winding of one of the gas valves to enable initial opening thereof; circuit means is provided to maintain the valve open when the normally-closed contacts are opened. The normally-open contacts are connected in series with the electrical winding of the other gas valve to enable opening thereof.

Relay Control Circuit And Method Of Operating Same

View page
US Patent:
53294173, Jul 12, 1994
Filed:
Jul 16, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/730470
Inventors:
David I. Kniepkamp - Fairview Heights IL
Dwain F. Moore - Allegan County MI
Bartholomew L. Toth - Crestwood MO
Bradley C. Zikes - St. Louis County MO
Assignee:
Emerson Electric Co. - St. Louis MO
International Classification:
H05B 102
US Classification:
361185
Abstract:
A method of operating a relay includes shifting, by a predetermined time increment each time the relay coil is energized, the time in the sine wave of the applied AC power source at which the relay coil is energized. The method further provides for similarly shifting the time in the sine wave at which the relay coil is de-energized. When applied to a system having two relays, the method includes providing such shifting to both relays and further includes providing a predetermined time delay between the time one relay is de-energized and the other relay is energized.
