Photochemical Reactor And Method

View page
US Patent:
44565127, Jun 26, 1984
Filed:
Jul 29, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/403187
Inventors:
Barrie H. Bieler - Walnut Creek CA
David C. Morgan - Magnolia TX
Robert R. Stringham - Concord CA
Assignee:
The Dow Chemical Company - Midland MI
International Classification:
B01J 1912
US Classification:
204162R
Abstract:
Photochemical reactions are carried out by passing the fluid to be irradiated through a plurality of capillaries, each of which is surrounded by an actinic-radiation emitting plasma; the capillaries being transparent to the radiation. By banding the capillaries with a radiation-opaque material, the fluid being treated can repeatedly be subjected to brief periods of irradiation, alternating with periods of non-irradiation, during each pass through the capillaries.

Plugging Micro-Leaks In Multi-Component, Ceramic Tubesheets With Material Leached Therefrom

View page
US Patent:
45059950, Mar 19, 1985
Filed:
Oct 19, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/312588
Inventors:
Barrie H. Bieler - Walnut Creek CA
Floris Y. Tsang - Walnut Creek CA
Assignee:
The Dow Chemical Company - Midland MI
International Classification:
H01M 436
US Classification:
429104
Abstract:
Cracks, in ceramic wall members, on the order of 1 micron or less in width are plugged helium-tight by selectively leaching a component of the wall member with a solvent, letting the resultant leach form a liquid bridge within the crack, removing the solvent and sintering the resultant residue. This method is of particular value for remedying microcracks or channels in a cell member constituting a tubesheet in a hollow fiber type, high temperature battery cell, such as a sodium/sulfur cell, for example.

Method Of Reducing The Sodium Sulfate Content Of Halite

View page
US Patent:
40949567, Jun 13, 1978
Filed:
Aug 12, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/824006
Inventors:
Barrie H. Bieler - Walnut Creek CA
Assignee:
The Dow Chemical Company - Midland MI
International Classification:
C01D 304
C01D 314
C01D 500
US Classification:
423179
Abstract:
The content of sodium sulfate (and less soluble sulfates) in rock salt (halite) can economically be reduced from levels as high as 5 weight percent to levels as low as about 0. 1 weight percent by the process of the invention. The halite is crushed to a certain particle size range and particles less than 0. 5 mm in effective diameter are removed while (or after) the crushed material is subjected to attrition washing with a low sulfate, high NaCl brine. The washed, coarse particles are rinsed with a low sulfate brine, drained and dried to an extent appropriate to their contemplated use.
