US Patent:
20020026659, Feb 28, 2002
Filed:
Dec 28, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/750980
Inventors:
Alan Blowers - St. Charles IL, US
Robert Conrad - Wheaton IL, US
Kimberly Funk - Oswego IL, US
Zubin Khambatta - Orland Park IL, US
Audrey Charles - Naperville IL, US
International Classification:
A01C001/06
A01C021/00
A01H005/00
C12N005/00
C12N005/02
US Classification:
800/298000, 435/430000, 047/057600
Abstract:
The present invention relates to developed seed that is singulated and free-flowing, and comprises a modified root structure whose root development is interrupted and altered, but that root development is capable of resuming when the developed seed is sown in a suitable environment. The developed seed can exhibit an emerged hypocotyl or lack an emerged hypocotyl. The developed seed is prepared as desiccation-intolerant seed and can be converted to be desiccation-tolerant. The present invention also relates to methods of making the developed seed.

4-Ketocarotenoids In Flower Petals

US Patent:
20040003430, Jan 1, 2004
Filed:
Mar 20, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/392942
Inventors:
Randal Hauptmann - Oswego IL, US
Robert Eisenreich - North Aurora IL, US
William Eschenfeldt - St. Charles IL, US
Zubin Khambatta - Orland Park IL, US
International Classification:
A01H001/00
C12N015/82
A61K035/78
US Classification:
800/282000, 424/778000
Abstract:
The formation of a carotenoid compound containing a 4-keto--ionene ring such as astaxanthin or canthaxanthin in flowers, and particularly in the corolla and reproductive parts of a flower of a higher plant whose flowers produce a carotenoid compound containing a -ionene ring such as -carotene or zeaxanthin, but otherwise do not produce astaxanthin or canthaxanthin is disclosed. One or more genes controlled by a promoter are inserted (transformed) into a higher plant. The inserted gene encodes a chimeric enzyme including (a) a carotenoid-forming enzyme that is at least a ketolase. That gene is operatively linked to (b) a plastid-directed transit peptide. Some higher plants to be transformed produce at least zeaxanthin or -carotene in their flowers prior to transformation, whereas other plants produce little if any colored carotenoid pigments prior to transformation and are transformed with a cassette of carotenoids-forming genes. Methods of transformation and use of the transformed plants are described.

US Patent:
20110151526, Jun 23, 2011
Filed:
Dec 20, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/972822
Inventors:
Charles Winston Saunders - Fairfield OH, US
Jun Xu - Mason OH, US
Phillip Richard Green - Wyoming OH, US
David Blair Cody - West Harrison OH, US
Zubin Saresh Khambatta - Fairfield OH, US
International Classification:
C12P 7/64
C12N 1/21
US Classification:
435134, 43525233
Abstract:
A method for producing anteiso fatty acid is provided. The method comprises culturing a cell comprising at least one exogenous or overexpressed polynucleotide comprising a nucleic acid sequence encoding a polypeptide that catalyzes at least one of the following reactions: conversion of pyruvate to citramalate; conversion of citramalate to citraconate; conversion of citraconate to β-methyl-D-malate; conversion of β-methyl-D-malate to 2-oxobutanoate; or conversion of threonine to 2-oxobutanoate, under conditions allowing expression of the polynucleotide(s) and production of anteiso fatty acid. Optionally the cell further comprises at least one exogenous or overexpressed polynucleotide comprising a nucleic acid sequence encoding a polypeptide that catalyzes conversion of 2-oxobutanoate to 2-aceto-2-hydroxy-butyrate, conversion of 2-aceto-2-hydroxy-butyrate to 2,3-dihydroxy-3-methylvalerate, and/or conversion of 2,3-dihydroxy-3-methylvalerate to α-keto-3-methylvalerate. A cell that produces anteiso fatty acid and a method of using the cell to produce anteiso fatty acid also are provided.

US Patent:
20110166370, Jul 7, 2011
Filed:
Jan 11, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/004077
Inventors:
Charles Winston Saunders - Fairfield OH, US
Jun Xu - Mason OH, US
Zubin Sarosh Khambatta - Fairfield OH, US
Phillip Richard Green - Wyoming OH, US
International Classification:
C07C 53/126
C12P 7/64
C12N 1/00
C12N 1/21
US Classification:
554 1, 435134, 435243, 43525233
Abstract:
Methods and cells for producing scattered branched-chain fatty acids are provided. For example, the invention provides a method for producing branched-chain fatty acid comprising a methyl on one or more even number carbons. The method comprises culturing a cell comprising an exogenous or overexpressed polynucleotide comprising a nucleic acid sequence encoding a polypeptide that catalyzes the conversion of propionyl-CoA to methylmalonyl-CoA and/or an exogenous or overexpressed polynucleotide comprising a nucleic acid sequence encoding a polypeptide that catalyzes the conversion of succinyl-CoA to methylmalonyl-CoA, under conditions allowing expression of the polynucleotide(s) and production of branched-chain fatty acid. The cell produces more branched-chain fatty acid comprising a methyl on one or more even number carbons than an otherwise similar cell that does not comprise the polynucleotide(s). A cell that produces branched-chain fatty acid and the branched-chain fatty acid also are provided.
