Abstract:
Several algorithms are provided to estimate and remove relative clock skews from delay measurements based on the computation of convex hulls. The algorithms are linear in the number of measurement points for the case with no clock resets. For the more challenging case with clock resets, i. e. , the clocks are reset to some reference times during the measurement period, linear algorithms are provided to identify the clock resets and derive the best clock skew lines. The algorithms are also extended to environments in which at least one of the clocks is controlled by Network Time Protocol. These algorithms can also be extended for active clock synchronization to replace or further improve Network Time Protocol.

Techniques for computing a multimedia stream schedule in a resource-constrained environment. In one aspect of the invention, a technique for processing multiple media streams in accordance with a resource-constrained environment includes the following steps/operations. An optimization associated with a composite representation of the multiple media streams is computed based on timing constraints associated with the multiple media streams and one or more constraints associated with at least one device in the resource-constrained environment useable to present at least one of the multiple media streams. Scheduling transmission and/or storage of the multiple media streams, based on the optimization, is then performed. The multiple media streams may be encoded, based on the optimization, prior to the scheduling step/operation. Advantageously, the present invention may provide a scheduling strategy to multiplex multiple objects in a resource-constrained data path, while respecting all the presentation deadlines, and minimizing the required playback delay and decoding buffer.

Abstract:
The present invention is a method and an apparatus for end-to-end travel time estimation using dynamic traffic data. In one embodiment, a method for estimating a fastest route between a first point in a transportation network and a second point in the transportation network includes receiving static data relating to static characteristics of a first zone and a second zone in the transportation network. In addition, real-time data relating to real-time traffic conditions in the first zone is also received. The static and real-time data is processed in accordance with at least one fine-grained load-generation technique to generate a first load for the first zone, and the static data is generated in accordance with at least one coarse-grained load-generation technique to generate a second load for the second zone. These first and second loads are then combined, converted to travel times, and scaled to facilitate the identification of a best or fastest route.

Abstract:
Disclosed is a method for stateless group communication based on constructing and encoding sender based trees. The headers obtained by encoding the distribution trees are inserted in each communication packet. The encoding allows partial or full decoding of the distribution trees. The encoding is performed to minimize the overhead of the header and the processing required for partial decoding of the distribution tree. Abstract:
The present invention addresses scalability and end-to-end reliability in overlay multicast networks. A simple end-system multicast architecture that is both scalable in throughput and reliable in an end-to-end way is used. In this architecture, the transfers between nodes use TCP with backpressure mechanisms to provide data packet transfers between intermediate nodes having finite-size forwarding buffers. There is also a finite-size backup buffer in each node to store copies of packets which are copied out from the receiver window to the forwarding buffers. These backup buffers are used when TCP connections are re-established to supply copies of data packets for the children nodes after their parent node fails, maintaining a complete sequence of data packets to all nodes within the multicast overlay network. The architecture provides end-to-end reliability, tolerates multiple simultaneous node failures and provides positive throughput for any group size and any buffer size.

Abstract:
In one embodiment, the present invention is a method and an apparatus for failure-resilient forwarding of data over a computer network. In one embodiment, a marker is introduced into the data stream, e. g. , at the sending node, and allows, in turn, forwarding nodes and/or receivers to efficiently track data stream reception. The marker functions as a checkpoint for the data transport process, and is identified and indexed at each forwarding node and receiver. Each receiver saves the marker prior to delivering data to an application, thereby designating a point in the data stream at which all preceding data is confirmed to have been delivered to the application. Thus, if a forwarding node fails, the receiver may request stream data from an alternate forwarding node by specifying to the alternate forwarding node to provide data starting from the marker.
