A Savonius Rotor may use the flow of wind or the flow of water from undersea current or tidal movement. The Savonius Rotor is passively vented and has a base support ring, and a space frame support structure supported on the base support ring. The space frame has building block cube elements which facilitate the ease of on-site assembly and erection. The space frame support structure supports sails and louvered panel assemblies for each of the cube elements. The louvered panel assemblies close passively when facing into the wind or ocean flow and open passively when moving into the wind or ocean flow. A distributed gearbox including planetary power takeoff assemblies located on the perimeter of the base support ring is provided for transfer of the extracted wind or ocean flow through the planetary power takeoff assemblies at points arrayed about the perimeter of the base ring.

A banded turbine configuration has an integral outer band support structure capable of providing two point simple support for a multiplicity of blades. A large scale vertical array has a set of twelve 23 m-diameter banded turbines with up to nine blades and resting on an Open Web Steel Joist (OWSJ) platform. The banded turbine configuration is supported off of a main shaft hub assembly, which is supported by forward and aft pillow block bearing assemblies. The banded turbine allows for a protective screen for bird- and bat-kill prevention. Each banded turbine employs DC alternators to provide a switchable output which is subsequently fed to a dedicated set of high efficiency grid-compatible solid state invertors or, alternatively, to energy storage.

A power generation system of fuel cells has modular fuel cell assemblies (modules) that are connected together in series. The modules each have independent ports for fuel and air connections. The fuel and air ports are connected to manifolds. A manifold on one module is connected to the manifold of an adjacent module using a low compression face seal at the connection. The manifolds have shape factors that provide controlled gas flow to enable Stoichiometric process uniformity among the respective series connected modules. Each module operates to generate power individually and the power connections for each module are also connected in series so that as more modules are connected together in series, the power generated by the system increases.

Fuel cell modules are assembled in receiver sections of an assembly in a power generation system. Both fuel and reactant gas feed and return lines provide leak-tight shutoff of all porting connections to the modular fuel cell by using failsafe (spring-loaded to the closed or “off” position) cartridge-type plug valves in the headers. The fuel and air ports of gas distribution manifolds on the ends of the module connect to distribution headers using a low compression face seal that is maintained in compression by providing tapered mating surfaces between the manifolds and headers. Through the insertion of a module in a receiving section, the flow control valves are actuated at the header distribution ports, the manifold ports are aligned with the header ports with their seals placed in compression and an electrical connection is established between electrical plugs protruding from the module and the base of the receiving section.

A portable proton exchange membrane fuel cell power supply system has a high pressure hydrogen gas supply that is provided from hydrogen storage cylinders that are enclosed in a case that has through holes for ventilation to prevent hydrogen gas concentrations from reaching explosive levels. Enclosed in a second case are a fuel cell stack, control unit, variable speed air compressor and power inverter. The cases incorporate lightweight, high-strength non-metallic materials and foam insulation to render the contents shock resistant. In operation a hydrogen gas connection line is made to extend between the hydrogen cylinders and the fuel cell that is connected through quick disconnect valves. The compressor is also connected to the fuel cell through a quick disconnect valve. Start up of the fuel cell is accomplished with a battery supplying power to the compressor while hydrogen gas is supplied at the same time.
