Method And Apparatus For Use With Downhole Tools Having Gas-Filled Cavities

View page
US Patent:
8403042, Mar 26, 2013
Filed:
Jul 14, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/835902
Inventors:
Taylor Green - Houston TX, US
Mike Frels - Richmond TX, US
Assignee:
Schlumberger Technology Corporation - Sugar Land TX
International Classification:
E21B 34/06
US Classification:
166264, 166100, 175 58
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for use with gas-filled downhole tools are disclosed herein. A disclosed example method includes opening an isolation valve of a downhole tool, wherein the isolation valve is in fluid communication with first and second ports of the downhole tool, and wherein the first and second ports are in fluid communication with respective first and second ends of an interior cavity of the downhole tool; coupling a source of inert gas to the first port and flowing the inert gas into the interior cavity of the downhole tool to expel air from the interior cavity through the second port; closing the second port when the air is expelled from the interior cavity; and closing the isolation valve to seal the inert gas in the interior cavity.

Delayed Phase Changing Agent For Invert Emulsion Drilling Fluid

View page
US Patent:
20040176255, Sep 9, 2004
Filed:
Feb 3, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/772550
Inventors:
Robert Horton - Sugar Land TX, US
Bethicia Prasek - Houston TX, US
Frank Evans - The Woodlands TX, US
Taylor Green - Houston TX, US
Mark Luyster - Houston TX, US
Steve Mason - Katy TX, US
Assignee:
M-I LLC
International Classification:
C09K007/00
US Classification:
507/100000
Abstract:
A method of controlling and delaying the inversion of a drilling fluid and the wettability of a filtercake by using a delayed phase changing agent. The filtercake is preferably formed while drilling a subterranean formation using a drilling fluid includes: an oleaginous fluid; a non-oleaginous fluid; an amine surfactant having the structure: wherein R is a C-Caliphatic hydrocarbon; R′ is an independently selectable from hydrogen or Cto Calkyl; A is NH or O, and 1x+y3. In the method, the filter cake is exposed to a delayed phase changing agent selected from the group consisting of aliphatic amine acids, salts of aliphatic amine acids and combinations thereof. In one preferred illustrative embodiment, the delayed phase changing agent is delivered in the form of a pill, the pill including a carrier fluid, a viscosifier and the delayed phase changing agent. The delayed phase changing agent may be selected from ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, alkali metal salts of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid and combinations of these and similar compounds.

Inhibiting Hydration Of Shale Using A Polyol And Potassium Formate

View page
US Patent:
20090131287, May 21, 2009
Filed:
Nov 14, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/291954
Inventors:
Kevin W. Smith - Houston TX, US
Taylor C. Green - Houston TX, US
International Classification:
C09K 8/60
US Classification:
507266
Abstract:
A substantially nonaqueous composition comprising a polyol and potassium formate is made by removing water from a mixture while heating. The polyol beneficially contains 3-50 hydroxyl groups and may be polyglycerin. The water removed may originate from a solution of one or more of the ingredients, from a condensation reaction of hydroxyl groups, and/or from an esterification reaction of hydroxyl groups on the polyol(s) and the formate groups. The composition is effective for treating shale formations in well drilling to reduce hydration and sloughing of the shale. If, in the course of treating shale formations, the polyol/potassium formate composition mixes with connate or other water, the water may be removed on returning the composition to the surface, and recycled.

Method Of Making Drilling Fluids Containing Microbubbles

View page
US Patent:
20090139771, Jun 4, 2009
Filed:
Nov 26, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/313958
Inventors:
Kevin W. Smith - Houston TX, US
Taylor C. Green - Houston TX, US
International Classification:
E21B 7/00
C09K 8/02
US Classification:
175 69, 507100
Abstract:
Light weight drilling fluids are prepared by passing a gas and the drilling fluid through a cavitation device. Bubbles are finely divided into microbubbles, thereby reducing the density of the fluid. Low HLB surfactants, natural polymers, and ionic-charged polymers may be added to enhance the stability of the microbubble suspension.

Drilling Fluids Containing Microbubbles

US Patent:
20090143253, Jun 4, 2009
Filed:
Nov 26, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/313947
Inventors:
Kevin W. Smith - Houston TX, US
Taylor C. Green - Houston TX, US
International Classification:
B01F 17/00
US Classification:
507102
Abstract:
A drilling fluid comprises water and microbubbles in an amount to achieve a density of the fluid in the range of 4-6 pounds per gallon; the desired density is achieved, and the novel drilling fluid exists, at pressures in the range of 350-5000 pounds per square inch.
