A reconfigurable optical add/drop module (ROADM) for dynamically adding or dropping various wavelengths of an optical signal without having to physically replace the module with a wavelength-specific add/drop module, and corresponding methods. A method is described for encoding video. A video sequence is captured at a full frame resolution. Boundaries for an inner region are identified within frames of the video sequence. The video sequence is encoded at the full frame resolution into a bitstream. The bitstream includes a sub-bitstream which encodes for the inner region. Data is embedded within the bitstream. The data identifies the sub-bitstream within the bitstream. In one aspect, the data is a header specifying the inner region. In another aspect, the encoding estimates motion for pixels within the inner region based on pixels within the inner region.

Abstract:

A polarization based optical switch capable of redirecting light signals to a plurality of different output locations. The optical switch utilizes polarization beam splitters to separate each optical channel into multiple polarization portions. Reflection members are used to redirect some of the polarization portions. Polarization rotators are capable of manipulating the plane of polarization of the polarization portions which will determine which of the output locations each optical channel transmits through. Another polarization beam splitter is used to recombine the polarization portions and direct them to one of the output locations depending on their respective planes of polarization.
