Method And Apparatus For Quick Starting A Rope-Start Two-Stroke Engine

View page
US Patent:
7066162, Jun 27, 2006
Filed:
May 26, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/579973
Inventors:
Paul Tat-Keung Ng - Vernon Hills IL, US
Assignee:
BRP US Inc. - Sturtevant WI
International Classification:
F02P 7/077
F02P 11/00
US Classification:
123617, 123631, 1231795
Abstract:
The period required to start a rope-start, two-cycle engine is reduced by enabling the engine's firing sequence to be initiated immediately upon determining the absolute rotational position of the engine and before determining the engine's direction of rotation. The rotational direction of the engine is then determined, and the firing sequence is disabled if the engine is counter-rotating. In this manner, the firing sequence is enabled much sooner in the engine's cycle than if the engine's rotational direction were determined before the firing sequence is enabled. The engine therefore starts more quickly. The method is particularly useful in battery-less engines which experience a delay in start-up due to the fact that the engine must rotate through at least part of a revolution before generating enough electrical power to operate the computer controlling operation of the engine. It is also particularly useful in short-pull engines in which manual actuation of a rope or other manually-powered starting mechanism drives the engine to rotate through no more than three-to-five revolutions.

Oil Supply Failure Detection Circuit

View page
US Patent:
56620810, Sep 2, 1997
Filed:
Jul 24, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/506587
Inventors:
Paul T. Ng - Vernon Hills IL
Michael J. French - Kenosha WI
Assignee:
Outboard Marine Corporation - Waukegan IL
International Classification:
F01M 118
US Classification:
123196S
Abstract:
An internal combustion engine assembly including an internal combustion engine, an electronic control unit for generating control signals for controlling the engine and a solenoid oil pump for supplying oil to the engine. The oil pump includes an armature and a solenoid winding encircling the armature and being connected to the electronic control unit so that the electronic control unit causes movement of the armature and so as to allow the electronic control unit to detect the flow of current in the solenoid winding.

Method And Apparatus For Creating A Profile Of Operating Conditions Of An Engine

View page
US Patent:
61156663, Sep 5, 2000
Filed:
Nov 23, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/199008
Inventors:
Paul T. Ng - Vernon Hills IL
Assignee:
Outboard Marine Corporation - Waukegan IL
International Classification:
G06F 1740
US Classification:
701115
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for measuring and recording various conditions of engine performance and in particular provides a useful record of the speeds at which the engine has been operated over the life of the engine.

Trigger System For Ignition System For Internal Combustion Engines

View page
US Patent:
48525367, Aug 1, 1989
Filed:
Dec 11, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/131858
Inventors:
Gerhard A. Maier - Mundelein IL
David L. Enlow - Wadsworth IL
Paul T. Ng - Park City IL
Assignee:
Outboard Marine Corporation - Waukegan IL
International Classification:
F02P 515
F02P 7067
US Classification:
123414
Abstract:
A trigger system for spark-fired internal combustion engines includes a plurality of magnets mounted in a structure that rotates in a timed relationship with the engine. One magnet is provided for each cylinder in the engine. All of the magnets except one have the same pole face exposed to couple inductively with a sensing coil, while the remaining magnet has an exposed pole of opposite polarity. The sensing coil is doubly wound and the resulting two coils are connected in opposite senses. The outputs of the two coils are taken to a decoding unit which produces an output of one pulse per magnet. Those pulses are substantially identical, regardless of magnet polarity, and are used to fire the spark plugs at the appropriate times. The decoding unit also produces a unique pulse which identifies the magnet of opposite polarity. That pulse is used to identify a selected cylider in the engine, such as the No.

Visual And Audible Warning Device

View page
US Patent:
49049828, Feb 27, 1990
Filed:
Feb 18, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/161458
Inventors:
M. Jeremy Lieb - Northbrook IL
Paul T. Ng - Vernon Hills IL
Assignee:
Outboard Marine Corporation - Waukegan IL
International Classification:
G08B 700
US Classification:
340326
Abstract:
A visual and audible warning device has a piezoelectric element operable to cause vibrations which are transmitted through a light transmitting member, and a light emitting element which upon actuation causes a visual warning to be transmitted through the light transmitting member. The visual and audible warnings transmitted by the light transmitting member are intended to attract the attention of the operator of a vehicle, such as a boat, above the sound of the engine or other noise. The device has circuit means coupled with the piezoelectric element and the light emitting element for causing a predetermined electrical signal to be applied to the piezoelectric element and causing energization of the light emitting element upon actuation. The device may include a housing having support portions for supporting the light transmitting member and one or more light emitting elements in position while sealing the light transmitting member and electronic components within the housing from the ambient atmosphere, including weather elements which may otherwise result in corrosion and failure of the device.
