Appl. No.:
09/063644
Inventors:
Ming Wu - Pacific Palisades CA
Li Fan - San Diego CA
Anis Husain - San Diego CA
Assignee:
OMM, Inc. - San Diego CA
International Classification:
G02B 626
US Classification:
385 18, 385 16, 385 25
Abstract:
A micromachined plate called a torsion plate, selectively pivots upon a substrate responsively to electrical force so as to move an attached micromirror in a same plane; thereby to accurately selectively intercept, and to reflect, a light beam that is moving parallel to the substrate; forming thus an optomechanical switch The electrical force may be electromagnetic in nature or, preferably, electrostatic. In various embodiments the pivoting torsion plate with the micromirror affixed may be (i) biased off the substrate by a three-dimensional structure and/or by a âreshapedâ torsion beam (ii) bent as plate and operated push OR pull, push AND pull, or push AND push, in a rocking operation, (iii) elevated above the substrate upon a self-assembling âmicro-elevator structureâ and/or (iv) moved greatly in angular position by action of a âmicro-flapâ A new design spring-loaded landing electrode and a torsion microhinge - further enhance performance. The micromachined, or Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS), optomechanical switch so formed is both fast and accurate to switch light over large angles up to 180Â while being highly resistant to sticking, or âstictionâ.

Systems And Methods For Optical Actuation Of Microfluidics Based On Opto-Electrowetting

View page
US Patent:
6958132, Oct 25, 2005
Filed:
May 31, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/161220
Inventors:
Pei Yu Chiou - Los Angeles CA, US
Ming C. Wu - Pacific Palisades CA, US
Assignee:
The Regents of the University of California - Oakland CA
International Classification:
B01L003/02
G01N001/10
G01N021/00
G01N021/29
C02F001/40
US Classification:
422100, 422 55, 422 81, 422 8205, 436180, 436164, 204600
Abstract:
The invention is related to methods and apparatus that manipulate droplets in a microfluidic environment. Advantageously, embodiments of the invention manipulate droplets by controlling the electro-wetting characteristics of a surface with light, thereby inducing a gradient in the surface tension of a droplet. The gradient in the surface tension propels the droplet by capillary force. A variety of operations, such as transporting, joining, cutting, and creating can be performed. Advantageously, embodiments of the invention obviate the need to create a relatively large and complex control electrode array. A plurality of photoconductive cells or a layer of a photoconductive material selectively couples an electrode carrying an electrical bias to otherwise floating conductive cells in response to a beam of light. The electrical bias applied to the conductive cell generates a localized electric field, which can change the contact angle of the droplet, thereby permitting the droplet to be propelled.

Method And Apparatus For Interleaved Optical Single Sideband Modulation

Stress Bimorph Mems Switches And Methods Of Making Same

View page
US Patent:
7053737, May 30, 2006
Filed:
Sep 19, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/251677
Inventors:
Robert N. Schwartz - Costa Mesa CA, US
Ming Wu - Los Angeles CA, US
Tsung-Yuan Hsu - Westlake Village CA, US
Adele E. Schmitz - Newbury Park CA, US
Robert Y. Loo - Agoura Hills CA, US
James H. Schaffner - Chatsworth CA, US
Gregory L. Tangonan - Oxnard CA, US
Assignee:
HRL Laboratories, LLC - Malibu CA
The Regents of the University of California - Oakland CA
International Classification:
H01H 51/22
US Classification:
335 78, 200181
Abstract:
A micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) switch formed on a substrate, the switch comprising a transmission line formed on the substrate, a substrate electrostatic plate formed on the substrate, and an actuating portion. The actuating portion comprises a cantilever anchor formed on the substrate and a cantilevered actuator arm extending from the cantilever anchor. Attraction of the actuator arm toward the substrate brings an electrical contact into engagement with the portions of the transmission line separated by a gap, thus bridging the transmission line gap and closing the circuit. In order to maximize electrical isolation between the transmission line and the electrical contact in an OFF-state while maintaining a low actuation voltage, the actuator arm is bent such that the minimum separation distance between the transmission line and the electrical contact is equal to or greater than the maximum separation distance between the substrate electrostatic plate and arm electrostatic plate.
