Method And System For Optimizing Live Migration Of Persistent Data Of Virtual Machine Using Disk I/O Heuristics

View page
US Patent:
8560791, Oct 15, 2013
Filed:
Feb 26, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/777329
Inventors:
Min Cai - Sunnyvale CA, US
Emre Celebi - Mountain View CA, US
Assignee:
VMware, Inc. - Palo Alto CA
International Classification:
G06F 12/00
US Classification:
711162, 711 6, 711156, 711161, 711203, 707639, 707649, 707650, 710 18, 718 1, 718100
Abstract:
Techniques for migrating persistent data between and across data stores are implemented using monitoring methods. The method includes classifying frequently updated blocks of persistent data to distinguish those blocks from less frequently updated blocks of persistent data. The less frequently updated blocks are copied from the source data store to the destination data store, such that persistent data is copied to the destination data store in the absence of the persistent data of the frequently updated blocks. The method further includes identifying a modified set of the less frequently updated blocks that are modified during the copying. The modified set of less frequently updated blocks is copied from the source data store to the destination data store, without copying the frequently updated blocks. It is then determined whether to copy the frequently updated blocks of persistent data from the source data store to the destination data store.

Method And System For Optimizing Live Migration Of Persistent Data Of Virtual Machine Using Disk I/O Heuristics

View page
US Patent:
20110066819, Mar 17, 2011
Filed:
Sep 14, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/881992
Inventors:
Ali MASHTIZADEH - El Cerrito CA, US
Min CAI - Sunnyvale CA, US
Emre CELEBI - Mountain View CA, US
Assignee:
VMWARE, INC. - Palo Alto CA
International Classification:
G06F 12/16
G06F 12/00
US Classification:
711162, 711E12001, 711E12103
Abstract:
Techniques for migrating persistent data of virtual machines between and across data stores are optimized using special tracking data structures and monitoring methods. Special tracking data structures include an incremental change block tracking bitmap that indicate what blocks have been modified during a copy operation. The determination of whether any one block has been modified during the copy operation is based on whether or not the copy operation has progressed past that block. Another special tracking data structure is a Bloom filter, which provides a space-efficient data structure for keeping track of dirtied blocks. In addition, heat-based optimization techniques are applied so that blocks that are frequently updated are filtered and not transferred to the destination data store until the last iteration of the migration process.

Live Replication Of A Virtual Machine Exported And Imported Via A Portable Storage Device

View page
US Patent:
20160188353, Jun 30, 2016
Filed:
Dec 30, 2014
Appl. No.:
14/586944
Inventors:
- Palo Alto CA, US
Min CAI - Sunnyvale CA, US
International Classification:
G06F 9/455
Abstract:
Exemplary methods, apparatuses, and systems receive a request to initiate replication of a virtual machine (VM). In response to the request, a copy of the VM disk is exported to a locally attached portable storage device while the VM continues running. In response to receiving indication of the VM disk being imported from the portable storage device locally within a destination data center, the host computer determines VM data within the source data center is different from or not included within the exported copy of the VM disk and transmits the VM data to the destination data center via a network connection while the VM continues running. An indication that the virtual machine data within the destination data center is within a threshold of similarity with virtual machine data within the source data center is transmitted to the destination data center via the network connection.

Determining Status Of Migrating Virtual Machines

View page
US Patent:
20150378759, Dec 31, 2015
Filed:
Jun 26, 2014
Appl. No.:
14/316729
Inventors:
- Palo Alto CA, US
Min Cai - Sunnyvale CA, US
Ilia Langouev - Santa Cruz CA, US
International Classification:
G06F 9/455
Abstract:
Systems and techniques are described for determining the status of migrating virtual machines. A described technique includes initiating a migration of one or more virtual machines from a source host that is located at a source site to a destination host that is located at a destination site. A determination is made that a fault has occurred during the migration of the one or more virtual machines. In response to determining that the error has occurred, a determination is made, for each virtual machine of the one or more virtual machines, whether the virtual machine has been fully migrated from the source host to the destination host.

Augmenting A Physical Device With Virtual Information

US Patent:
20150109329, Apr 23, 2015
Filed:
Oct 18, 2013
Appl. No.:
14/057889
Inventors:
- Palo Alto CA, US
Min CAI - Sunnyvale CA, US
Uma CHINGUNDE - San Francisco CA, US

Assignee:
VMware,Inc. - Palo Alto CA
International Classification:
G06T 11/60
US Classification:
345629
Abstract:
In a computer-implemented method for augmenting at least one physical device with virtual information indicia corresponding to the at least on physical device supporting a virtualization infrastructure is observed. Based on the observed indicia, virtual information of said virtualization infrastructure correlating to the at least one physical device is displayed.

US Classification:
345633
Abstract:
In a computer-implemented method for augmented reality aided navigation to at least one physical device indicia corresponding to the at least one physical device supporting virtualization infrastructure is observed. Based on the observed indicia, navigational cues correlating to a location of the at least one physical device is generated. Navigational cues are displayed such that augmented reality aided navigation is provided to the at least one physical device.

High Availability Using Dynamic Quorum-Based Arbitration

US Patent:
20150082302, Mar 19, 2015
Filed:
Sep 16, 2013
Appl. No.:
14/028122
Inventors:
- Palo Alto CA, US
Amit BOSE - San Jose CA, US
Ashish K. HANWADIKAR - San Jose CA, US
Min CAI - Sunnyvale CA, US
Dilpreet S. BINDRA - Hayward CA, US
Assignee:
VMware, Inc. - Palo Alto CA
International Classification:
G06F 9/455
US Classification:
718 1
Abstract:
Exemplary methods, apparatuses, and systems include a first virtual infrastructure manager (VIM) determining that the first VIM is to be an active manager of a plurality of virtual machines running on a plurality of host devices and that a second VIM is to be a standby manager of the plurality of virtual machines. The first VIM selects a first host device from the plurality of host devices to serve as a passive witness node in arbitrating active and standby roles between the first VIM and second VIM. The first host device runs one or more virtual machines and is managed by the active manager. The first VIM selects a first host device by confirming that the first host device is available to each of the first VIM and the second VIM. The first VIM writes a file on the first host device indicating that the first VIM is the active manager.
