An apparatus for interfacing an integrated circuit with external circuitry includes a transistor having an emitter coupled to a node for receiving a control current (IP) from the integrated circuit. A beta compensator disposed within the integrated circuit provides a compensating current (IM) to the node. The compensating current IM is proportional to a base current (IB) of the transistor. A method of interfacing the integrated circuit with external circuitry includes the step of providing the control current (IP) from the integrated circuit to a node coupled to a transistor emitter. A compensating current (IM) is provided to the node in response to the transistor base current (IB). The net node current provided to the emitter is IP+IB so that the transistor collector current is substantially the same as the control current. The transistor collector is coupled to the external circuitry.

An analog front end for communicating discrete multitone modulated signals on a subscriber line includes a hybrid network for eliminating near-end echos. The hybrid network includes a hybrid input, a receive input, and a hybrid output. The receive input is capacitively coupled to a subscriber line carrying an upstream data signal and a downstream data signal. The hybrid input is capacitively coupled to receive the upstream data signal from a driver. The driver also provides the upstream data signal to the subscriber line. The hybrid output provides the extracted downstream data signal from the subscriber line. The hybrid network may be fabricated on an integrated circuit die. In one embodiment, the hybrid network is a complementary metal oxide semiconductor integrated circuit.

An online system performs upgrades of replicated databases. The online system stores data in a primary site and a secondary site. The primary site comprising databases used to process client requests and a secondary site comprising databases used as standby. The online system upgrades databases of both sites by upgrading the secondary site, switching client requests to the secondary site while using the databases of primary site as standby databases. The online system then upgrades the primary site. The process allows the online system to upgrade databases with small down time.
