Power Distribution With Redundant Circuitry For Reliability

View page
US Patent:
6459172, Oct 1, 2002
Filed:
Mar 20, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/813426
Inventors:
James L. Lau - Santa Ana CA
Xiao Ping Jin - Santa Ana CA
Assignee:
Broadband Telcom Power, Inc. - Santa Ana CA
International Classification:
H02J 700
US Classification:
307 64
Abstract:
A power distributing mechanism includes a regulating circuit disposed between at least two circuit portions. The regulating circuit has bifilar-wound windings electrically coupled to the circuit portions. In a first embodiment, the two circuit portions withdraw power from two separate power sources. The regulating circuit, in response to power withdrawn from the power sources passing through the circuit portions, proportionally allocates the withdrawn power between the circuit portions. In a second embodiment, the two circuit portions withdraw power from a single power source. The two circuit portions serve as redundant reliability backup to each other. In the event of circuit failure in one of the circuit portions, the regulating circuit in response to the failure proportionally allocates power to the remaining functioning circuit portion.

Equipotential Fault Tolerant Integrated Circuit Heater

View page
US Patent:
6492620, Dec 10, 2002
Filed:
May 18, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/860872
Inventors:
James C. Lau - Torrance CA
Assignee:
TRW Inc. - Redondo Beach CA
International Classification:
H05B 300
US Classification:
219209, 361782, 347210
Abstract:
Fault tolerance is incorporated within the integral electric heaters of a reworkable electronic semiconductor component, such as a reworkable multi-chip module, to increase production yield and longevity of the rework feature. Components of the foregoing kind contain a multi-layer substrate to bond to a printed wiring board, and, for rework, the component includes a plurality of electric heaters arranged side by side on a bottom layer of the substrate. When energized with current, the heaters generate sufficient heat to weaken the adhesive or solder bond to the printed wiring board without delaminating the layers of the substrate, allowing the electronic semiconductor component to be pulled away from the printed wiring board for rework. Additional circuitry is included to automatically route heater current around, that is bypass, any current-interrupting break(s) as may form in any of the electric heaters giving the heaters a fault tolerance.

Utilization Of Proximity Effect In Ripple Noise Filtering

View page
US Patent:
6498546, Dec 24, 2002
Filed:
Aug 25, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/648987
Inventors:
James Leych Lau - Santa Ana CA, 92705
International Classification:
H03H 700
US Classification:
333181, 333184
Abstract:
An electrical noise-filtering assembly includes first and second busbars. The first busbar is spaced from the second busbar at a fixed distance sufficient to induce the proximity effect. As arranged, high frequency noise having high order harmonics adhere to the surfaces spaced by the fixed distance. Noise can be removed efficiently by disposing low equivalent series resistance (ESR) noise filters between the surfaces where the noise harmonics concentrate.

Proportional Distribution Of Power From A Plurality Of Power Sources

View page
US Patent:
6525435, Feb 25, 2003
Filed:

James L. Lau - Santa Ana CA
Xiao Ping Jin - Santa Ana CA
Assignee:
Broadband Telcom Power, Inc. - Santa Ana CA

Method For Manufacturing An Electroluminescent Lamp

View page
US Patent:
6607413, Aug 19, 2003
Filed:
Jun 29, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/894239
Inventors:
William C. Stevenson - Santa Ana CA
Philip Chan - Santa Ana CA
James Lau - Santa Ana CA
Assignee:
Novatech Electro-Luminescent, Inc. - Chino CA
International Classification:
H05B 3310
US Classification:
445 24, 156 67, 427 66, 313506
Abstract:
A method for manufacturing low cost electroluminescent (EL) lamps is disclosed. The method of the present invention includes the first step of die cutting, embossing or chemically etching the metal foil surface of a metal foil bonded flexible electrical insulation to simultaneously form one or more rear capacitive electrodes, electrical terminations, optical registration fiducial indicia, and a continuous carrier means that is then coupled to a precisely positioned indexing system. Next, the rear metal foil capacitive electrodes are coated with a capacitive dielectric layer precisely isolating the rear electrode form. In the third step, a layer of electroluminescent phosphor ink is applied to the rear capacitive electrodes to precisely form areas of illumination. In step four, a layer of light transmissive and electrically conductive ink is applied to cover the EL phosphor layer. Next, in step five a transparent polyester film or ultraviolet activated dielectric coating is applied to the entire surface of the lamp.

Method For Manufacturing Low Cost Electroluminescent (El) Illuminated Membrane Switches

View page
US Patent:
6698085, Mar 2, 2004
Filed:
Aug 30, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/942339
Inventors:
William C. Stevenson - Santa Ana CA
James L. Lau - Santa Ana CA
Assignee:
Novatech Electro-Luminescent, Inc. - Chino CA
International Classification:
H01H 1100
US Classification:
29622, 29846, 29847, 216 13
Abstract:
A method for manufacturing low cost electroluminescent (EL) illuminated membrane switches is disclosed. The method includes the first step of die cutting, embossing or chemically etching the metal foil surface of a metal foil bonded, light transmitting flexible electrical insulation to simultaneously form one or more front capacitive electrodes, membrane switch contacts and electrical shunt, electrical distribution means and electrical terminations that together comprise a flexible printed circuit panel. This continuous flexible printed circuit substrate is then coupled to a precisely positioned indexing system. Next, the front metal foil capacitive electrodes are coated with a light transmissive electrically conductive layer. Then, a layer of electroluminescent phosphor is applied to the electrically conductive layer, a layer of capacitive dielectric is applied insulating the phosphor layer, a rear capacitive electrode is then applied over the capacitive dielectric layer, thus forming an electroluminescent lamp portion. Next, a transparent dielectric coating is applied to the entire surface of the lamp and substrate with open portions exposing electrical terminations, switch contacts and shunt.
