A method and apparatus for processing a set of signals to identify narrow bandwidth features of the signals, and optionally to process the signals further to extract information about the identified narrow-band features. The invention processes a set of input signal frames (a two-dimensional pixel array) to generate a narrow-band feature signal (also a two-dimensional pixel array) from which narrow-band features of the input signal frames can be efficiently, automatically, and unambiguously identified. In a class of preferred embodiments, the input signal frames are the power spectra of a set of sequentially measured signals. Thus, the set of input signal frames is a "spectrogram," comprising rows and columns of pixels (with row indices representing time, and column indices representing frequency). Alternatively, the input signal frames represent a data array of another type, such as a correlogram or a sequence of images. In a class of embodiments, the input signal frames are processed to identify narrow-band pixels (the subset of input signal frame pixels which represent narrow-band energy, or narrow-band processes).

An adaptive feedforward method of canceling and calibrating harmonic disturbances in a magnetic disk drive storage system includes expressing harmonic disturbances to the system as d(t) and expressing an output of the system as y(t). A control signal u(t) is used to cancel the harmonic disturbance d(t), where u(t) is the estimated value of d(t) such that u(t) is an estimated value of d(t). Estimated coefficients a. sub. i and b. sub. i of u(t) are updated using the derivatives of the estimated coefficients and a constant adaptation gain g. sub. i for the ith frequency component of the disturbance. The values of estimated coefficients are implemented in real time. The control signal u(t) is combined with the system output signal y(t) to cancel u(t) from y(t). The functions representing d(t), y(t), and u(t) are included in drive code for the system. A sine function is implemented by a polynomial curve fitting method and the sine function is approximated as a polynomial function for a quarter cycle of the sine function using only four data points.

In particular, a data protector may define a set of access levels associated with content within data using a set of access policies (e.g., a partial access level to inventory data for an inventory server, a full access level to inventory data and billing data for a shopping website server, etc.). The data protector may secure (e.g., encrypt) the data to create protected data, so that clients may be unable to access content of the protected data without obtaining access through the data protector. In this way, the data protector may selectively provide clients with access to content within the protected data according to respective access levels for the different clients (e.g., access to inventory data, but not billing data, may be provided to the inventory server by the data protector).

In some aspects, a personal cleartext document may be used to generate an encrypted document digest and an encrypted document on a first device. A second device may decrypt the document digest, build a personal search index based on the decrypted document digest, and store the encrypted document in a data store. The first device may subsequently receive a cleartext search query that is used to query the personal search index on the second device for encrypted documents.
