View page
US Patent:
6558708, May 6, 2003
Filed:
Apr 10, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/546119
Inventors:
Henry C. Lin - Manhattan Beach CA
Assignee:
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
A61K 916
US Classification:
424490, 424451, 424464, 424474, 424489
Abstract:
Disclosed are a method of manipulating the rate of upper gastrointestinal transit of a substance in a mammal. Also disclosed are methods of manipulating satiety and post-prandial visceral blood flow. A method of treating visceral pain or visceral hypersensitivity in a human subject is also described. A method for prolonging the residence time of an orally or enterally administered substance by promoting its dissolution, bioavailability and/or absorption in the small intestine is also described. These methods are related to a method of transmitting to and replicating at a second location in the central nervous system a serotonergic neural signal originating at a first location in the proximal or distal gut of a mammal and/or a method of transmitting to and replicating at a second location in the upper gastrointestinal tract a serotonergic neural signal originating at a first location in the proximal or distal gut.

Method Of Diagnosing Irritable Bowel Syndrome And Other Disorders Caused By Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth By Detecting The Presence Of Anti-Saccharomyces Cerivisiae Antibodies (Asca) In Human Serum

View page
US Patent:
6562629, May 13, 2003
Filed:
Aug 11, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/374143
Inventors:
Henry C. Lin - Manhattan Beach CA
Mark Pimentel - Los Angeles CA
Assignee:
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
G01N 33564
US Classification:
436506, 435 4, 435 71
Abstract:
Disclosed is a method of diagnosing small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or an autoimmune disease by sampling serum from a human subject having a suspected diagnosis of any of these conditions and analyzing the serum for the presence of ASCA, which corroborates the suspected diagnosis. A method of determining a predisposition for developing Crohns, in a human subject who does not present a set of symptoms characteristic of the disease and who has small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, involves sampling serum from the subject and analyzing the serum for the presence of ASCA. The presence of ASCA in the serum indicates a predisposition for developing Crohns disease. Also disclosed is a kit for diagnosing and treating small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or an autoimmune disease, such as multiple sclerosis or systemic lupus erythematosus.

Abstract:
Disclosed is a method of diagnosing irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus erythematosus, or Crohns disease, which involves detecting the presence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) in a human subject having at least one symptom associated with a suspected diagnosis of any of those diagnostic categories. Also disclosed is a method of treating these disorders, and other disorders caused by SIBO, that involves at least partially eradicating a SIBO condition in the human subject. The method includes administration of anti-microbial or probiotic agents, or normalizing intestinal motility by employing a prokinetic agent. The method improves symptoms, including hyperalgesia related to SIBO and disorders caused by SIBO. Also disclosed is a kit for the diagnosis or treatment of irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autoimmune diseases, or Crohns disease.
