US Patent:
8039096, Oct 18, 2011
Filed:
Jun 29, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/493713
Inventors:
Dong Zhu - Farmington Hills MI, US
Robert Milner - Warren MI, US
Alaa AbdelAzim Elmoursi - Troy MI, US
Assignee:
Eaton Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
B32B 5/14
B32B 5/00
B05D 3/00
B05D 3/10
C23C 14/34
US Classification:
428220, 428332, 427299, 427307, 20419211
Abstract:
A coating includes a first layer of a ceramic alloy and a second layer disposed on the first layer and including carbon. The coating has a hardness of from 10 to 20 GPa and a coefficient of friction of less than or equal to 0. 12. A method of coating a substrate includes cleaning the substrate, forming the first layer on the substrate, and depositing the second layer onto the first layer to thereby coat the substrate.

Assignee:
Eaton Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
F04B 49/00
US Classification:
417310, 418152, 428697, 428698
Abstract:
A device configured for converting energy includes a first surface, a second surface configured for moving with respect to the first surface during operation of the device, and a coating disposed on at least one of the first surface and the second surface. The coating includes a first layer of a ceramic alloy represented by the general formula AlMgB—X, wherein X is present in an amount of from 0 to 70 parts by weight based on 100 parts by weight of the ceramic alloy and is a doping agent selected from the group of Group IV elements and borides and nitrides thereof, and a second layer disposed on the first layer and including carbon in a gradient concentration. The coating has a hardness of from 10 to 20 GPa and a coefficient of friction of less than or equal to 0. 12.

Polished Gear Surfaces

US Patent:
6732606, May 11, 2004
Filed:
Jun 30, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/607958
Inventors:
Dong Zhu - Farmington Hills MI
Michael Bujold - Royal Oak MI
Patrick Watts - Gastonia NC
Assignee:
Eaton Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
F16H 104
US Classification:
74460, 74457, 74467, 74421 R
Abstract:
An optimally finished gear has a surface roughness between approximately 5 micro-inches Ra to 10 micro-inches Ra. The reduced surface roughness, when located at the gear teeth, can reduce the maximum contact stress by more than fifty percent. Similarly, the subsurface shear stress can be reduced by approximately thirty percent. The reduced contact stress and reduced shear stress results from improved lubrication conditions between the gear teeth. Surface roughness greater than 10 micro-inches Ra results in increased contact of the surface peaks, while surface roughness lower than 3 micro-inches is too smooth to retain adequate lubrication between the gear teeth.
