Inventors:
Brent Lee - San Jose CA, US
International Classification:
B32B015/04
B05D001/36
B05D003/06
B05D001/06
US Classification:
428/457000, 428/458000, 427/475000, 427/250000, 427/402000, 427/385500, 427/558000
Abstract:
In the generalized method of the present invention a heat curable coating is first applied to an article of manufacture. Thereafter, an outer coating is applied to the article in a physical vapor deposition process, and the heat from the PVD process cures the first layer while the PVD coating is being deposited upon the article. In the preferred embodiments, the heat curable coating is a powder coating and the cathodic arc of the PVD process provides the heat that cures the powder coating. An infrared heat source within the PVD chamber may be utilized to preheat the powder coating which is typically composed of an epoxy-polymer compound. Articles of manufacture having the coating of the present invention formed thereon are manufactured with less energy and labor costs.

Thin-Film Deposition Of Low Conductivity Targets Using Cathodic Arc Plasma Process

US Patent:
20020139662, Oct 3, 2002
Filed:
Feb 21, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/791438
Inventors:
Brent Lee - San Jose CA, US
International Classification:

US Classification:
204/192380, 204/298410, 204/298120, 204/298130
Abstract:
This invention discloses a cathodic arc deposition apparatus for depositing a layer of low-conductivity material on a surface of a substrate. The cathodic arc deposition apparatus includes a source contained in a vacuum chamber. The source further includes a target mount for mounting a target thereon wherein the target comprising fused mixture of powders of the low-conductivity material hot-pressed with powders of a high conductivity material functioning as conductivity-enhancement matrix. The cathodic arc deposition apparatus further includes an electric arc for striking the target to evaporate a plurality of ions of the low conductivity material and the high conductivity material. The cathodic arc deposition apparatus further includes an ion trajectory guiding means for guiding the ions for projecting to the substrate contained in the vacuum chamber. The cathodic arc deposition apparatus further includes an ion shielding means for selective shielding ions of the conductive material for depositing only the ions of the low-conductivity material on the substrate.

Electric Arc Vapor Deposition Apparatus And Method

View page
US Patent:
56560915, Aug 12, 1997
Filed:
Nov 2, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/556821
Inventors:
Brent Lee - San Jose CA
Youguang Liu - Beijing, CN
Assignee:
Vacuum Plating Technology Corporation - San Jose CA
International Classification:
C23C 1400
C23C 1432
US Classification:
118723EB
Abstract:
A present invention relates to improvements in electric arc vapor deposition chambers. A first improvement involves the utilization of a heat shield disposed between a source and a substrate to decrease heat energy radiating from the source directly to the substrate. In a preferred embodiment, the heat shield is cooled by a liquid cooling system which acts to remove heat energy from the chamber. An improved source mounting assembly of the present invention provides for enhanced cooling of the source material. It includes the utilization of a back surface of the source material as a wall of a coolant chamber within the source mounting assembly. An O-ring seal is disposed at the rearward face of the source material to provide a cool temperature environment for the O-ring seal while it prevents coolant leakage into the chamber. An improved method for supplying electrical power for a substrate includes the utilization of a pulsed DC bias voltage which acts to improve the characteristics of a deposited film while avoiding unwanted overheating of the substrate.

Apparatus And Method To Form Coated Shielding Layer For Coaxial Signal Transmission Cables

View page
US Patent:
60476605, Apr 11, 2000
Filed:
Sep 6, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/927553
Inventors:
Brent W. Lee - San Jose CA
International Classification:
C23C 1600
US Classification:
118723VE
Abstract:
The present invention discloses a physical vapor deposition apparatus includes a cable driving and cooling mechanism for driving a cable there-through and for depositing a thin layer of evaporated conductive film on the cable. The thin layer conductive layer can therefore function as a shield to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI) during high frequency signal transmission. In a preferred embodiment, the apparatus for forming shielding layer for a cable includes two separate chambers. The first chamber is an electric arc chamber for generating metallic vapor by the use of electric arcs. A second chamber is an electron beam chamber. Electron beam generated from an electron gun is irradiated upon an aluminum wire to evaporate the aluminum wire and to deposit the aluminum vapor on the surface of the cable. Both of these chambers are provided with wheels which are employed to direct and pull the cables through the chambers. The wheel is built on a cooling tubes where the cable is cooled through contact with the surface of the wheel with cooling tube formed underneath.
